Former Montrose student receives broadcasting scholarship named after Tom Skinner

MLIVEFLINT – Tom Skinner might be gone but that doesn’t mean the well-known Flint-area sports figure isn’t still helping local broadcasting students.

The Detroit Sports Media Association has established the Thomas E. Skinner Memorial Broadcasting Scholarship to honor the longtime Flint-area personality, who died this month at age 63 after undergoing surgery a few days earlier.

The first recipient of the scholarship is Gabe Patterson, a 2021 graduate of Montrose High School. Skinner was the Montrose Digital Media advisor and Patterson was one of his students for three years.

Patterson received the scholarship during the Detroit Sports Media’s 13th annual Tablegate Luncheon in Southfield. It was presented to him by Jennifer Hammond of Fox 2 in Detroit. She is the president of the Detroit Sports Media Association.

Patterson will apply the $3,000 scholarship to tuition at Specs Howard School of Broadcasting Arts with an eye on becoming a broadcast technician.

Skinner spent 42 years working in Flint-area sports. He served as Comcast Cable’s sports director for 27 years and was Montrose’s digital media advisor for 12 years. He also broadcast events for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, the Flint Generals and was the PA announcer at many other local events.
