The DSBA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Donations to public charities can be tax deductible to the individual donor up to 50% of the donor’s income

In 1955, at the behest of the late Ty Tyson and Don Wattrick, two former Presidents, the DSBA Charity Fund (formerly the scholarship program), was initiated. Working with the Mayor of Detroit's Committee on Youth, the DSBA membership established a modest scholarship fund.  The objective of the program was to identify an individual, who without assistance, would be unable to take advantage of higher learning educational opportunities.  The first recipient was Charles Marble.  In 1969, the DSBA voted to broaden the scholarship parameters to include young men and women.  Six were selected.

Since those early years, the DSBA has extended its support to charitable organizations like the Michigan Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame and Detroit Lions Academy.  It has also donated to the broadcasting programs of numerous Michigan high schools… including Warren Cousino, Southfield, Grosse Pointe South and North, Farmington, Lake Orion, Montrose, Plymouth-Canton and River Rouge.  The DSBA has also assisted the Student Broadcast Foundation, as well as students attending broadcast programs at Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Specs Howard and Spring Arbor College.

Any Michigan college, university, high school or middle school with a broadcast curriculum which has a need for equipment may submit their request to:

Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association, Attn: Grant Fund,
PO Box 1222, Warren, MI 48090

The proposal must include the specific need, actual price quotations and the reason for the request from a school official on school letterhead. Contact the DSBA with any questions at
